Some nice photos of Maud rowing out of Puerto Callao Peru by Mariana Bazo from Reuters Newsagency |
!!!Maud departed Puerto Callao miércoles 12 de enero bound for Tahiti!!! "Et voila, I'm setting out at last! It has taken a year to prepare for this moment. I will cast off Océor's mooring lines late this afternoon, about 16h. I think I will row all night to try and avoid the heat. I expect to have to row hard for about 3 weeks to escape from the negative influence of the Peruvian coastal waters. The weather forecast indicates light winds and a cold ocean current that will push me in spite of my best efforts to the north. So I will be forced to approach Polynesia from the North East (between the islands and reefs!!). A vessel from the Marina Nacional Peruana will accompany me for the first night as I pass through very busy shipping lanes of container and cargo ships. After they leave me I will still be rowing through a zone frequented by many cargo ships, fishing vessels and also pirates praying on them according to the Navy, for the first 2 to 3 weeks. I feel both exuberant to be launching into such an exciting adventure and stressed by the problems posed by the early part of the row. I can't wait to row far away from these potentially dangerous waters. I think warmly of all of you who helped and encouraged me, and who wrote a few words for me to take on my voyage. You will all be in my heart when I set out on my adventure this evening. Prochaines nouvelles en mer, Je vous embrasse, Maud" Bon Chance .... Allez Maud .... Robert |
